Email sent to Trinitarian Friends

The below Email is what I sent to my Trinitarian friends. It covers the basics of why the Trinity doctrine cannot be found in the bible and that it was created over around 400 years of haggling by the church leadership. I hope this email will help anyone see the reasons why trinity Christians are becoming Biblical Unitarians.

I was a Trinitarian from the time that I was born again in 1985 and never thought to study if it was true. Then over 30 years later, I came across an article which led me to look at what the bible really taught about God, Jesus and the Holy Spirit. The first truth I came to understand was that the Holy Spirit was not a person but an extended part of God the Father just as the term states “spirit of God”. How could the Holy Spirit conceive Jesus in Mary’s womb when God was meant to be His Father?

Then in Genesis 1:5 it uses the pronoun “He” and that meant that Elohim was God and not the trinity as it would have stated “We” or “They” or something similar. So I now believe what the bible states and not what a tradition setup by men in the 4th and 5th centuries.

Grace to you and peace from God the Father and our Lord Jesus Christ,

I hope you all do me the honour by reading this email. I love you all and want the best for you.

I really believe that God will confirm whether what I am sharing is true or not. If you want to know the truth you will find it. Whether the trinity is a biblical teaching is important part of the Christian faith. More important than we can ever really grasp.

If you set yourself to not want to know the truth that is what will happen.

Now the automatic response will be something to what I shared below will be something like:- “who are you Raymond to question the thousands of leaders and Christians over the centuries that have taught the trinity doctrine. How could they all be wrong?”

I would say that the trinity doctrine has been handed down as tradition over the centuries and no one has actually checked to see if it is correct and are there another way to understand the scripture on who God is. We all get into habits and trust our spiritual leaders. This has happened decades after decades.

I have already been called a heretic and many other names and shunned, by sincere Christians who have not even answered my basic questions on who fathered Jesus if the Holy Spirit is a person, based on Matthew 1:18 and Luke 1:35.

We are supposed to be able to support what we believe and not by calling people names. I have seen that critical thinking is a lost way on how to discuss and debate ideas and beliefs.

I realise that you have not asked for this email and that I might be taking liberties by sending it. I would not be sending this email if it was not very important. I hope you will see why as you read all of the below. The doctrine of the Trinity has scant support in the Bible and goes against what the Jews believed at the time of Jesus ministry. They believed in One God and Person YHWH and what is called Monotheism (One God). You can check this out with any Jew. If Jesus was to change this understanding then he would have to explain in detail why the change. Paul would have been asked many questions on this subject, but we dont see any letters that address the Trinity doctrine. We do see Paul teaching on Gentiles being able to partake in God’s salvation for example.

There should have been a controversy over the Trinity teaching by all the Jews at least. There is not any that is recorded in the first 100 years after Jesus death.

For clarity’s sake, it is helpful to understand what the Trinity is. The orthodox doctrine of the Trinity is that the Father is God, the Son is God, and the Holy Spirit is God, and the three of them are co-equal, co-eternal, and share the same essence, and together those three individual “Persons” are one triune God. Also that Jesus is both 100% God and 100% man, and both Jesus’ divine nature and his human nature live together in his flesh body. The doctrine of the Trinity, though widely believed, is never stated in the Bible.

We must look at what Jesus states about himself, God his Father and the Holy Spirit in the three synoptic gospels of Matthew, Mark and Luke. John’s Gospel was written later than these books ( between 60-90 AD). It highlights certain events to address the issues that the Christians had mainly due to Gnosticism creeping into Christian beliefs. But in Luke for example he states in Luke 1:3-4 it seemed good to me also, having had perfect understanding of all things from the very first, to write to you an orderly account, most excellent Theophilus, 4 that you may know the certainty of those things in which you were instructed.

Please look at my scriptural foundation which is based on the literal straight forward meaning of the scriptures. Our minds just reads over phrases that we have read before and think we know what they mean. We have been pre-programmed not to understand them with a Trinitarian bias. Most Christians have never had a Trinity teaching but have been told what certain scriptures mean without any proof or stating the alternative view. We all know the idea of “confirmation bias”.

Confirmation bias is the tendency to seek out and prefer information that supports our preexisting beliefs. As a result, we tend to ignore any information that contradicts those beliefs. Confirmation bias is often unintentional but can still lead to poor decision-making in real-life and other contexts. It is not always a negative. An example is when you buy a car say a “Mini” you will see lots of mini’s on the road and think they are really common when they are not.

Most bible translators if not all believe in the Trinity and have translated Hebrew and Greek words with this in mind. So when a word has multiple meanings they tend to use an English word that supports the trinity doctrine. They have not done this with any malice or trying to hide the truth. To them it is the truth. This is an example of confirmation bias.

Please note:– To the reader you dont have to read any of posts that I have put links for in the email. It is just if you need more information and understanding.

The Holy Spirit and Translation Bias A Smoking Gun of Trinity Mischief

It was not until A.D. 381 that some Christians officially recognized the Holy Spirit as an equal person of God in the Constantinopolitan Creed.

What Some OT scriptures teach about God

Malachi 2:10 Have we not all one Father? Has not one God created us? Why do we deal treacherously with one another by profaning the covenant of the fathers?

The Hebrew word for one is “echad” which means the numeral (number) 1. So not 3 in 1 or some plural type idea.

This what the Jews would have believed about God. There is no indication that God is 3 persons in the Old Testament and this all that they had at the time. Many point to Genesis 1:1 using the belief that Elohim means a plurality of Gods. This cannot be assumed or even proven. It is seen by most theologians as a superlative plural as our God is higher and more powerful than any other god. El comes from the Cannanite language. When we use our own understanding and not what the scriptures actually state is called Eisegesis. i.e. Reading into scripture what we think it means and not using the context and what the words actually mean at the time they were written. It can be proved that Moses was not trying to say that God is made up of multiple persons. Moses actually writes in other places using Elohim for himself. If he meant more than one God he would have used another word or phrase. Even the translators who are trinitarians translated Elohim as God and not Gods.

Exodus 4:16 “And he (Moses) shall speak for you to the people, and he shall be as your mouth, while you shall be to him as God (elohim)”.

Exodus 7:1 “Behold, I have made you God to Pharaoh, and Aaron your brother shall be your prophet”.

We have misunderstood what the word God means which has led in part to the wrong understanding of this word. If you would like more detail you can go to the below post. The short version is that Moses was representing God when dealing with Pharaoh. He was God’s spoke person. His personal agent. Pharaoh would have recognised Moses as someone who was powerful and in authority which is the what Elohim is trying to say. The Hebrew idea of the word “God” is someone who is in some position of authority and has the power to back it up.

Not Understanding what the Bible Means by “God”

You all will find this whole new understanding of the Trinity being wrong a very challenging and unbelievable but please take the time to mull over. Check out the scriptures for yourselves. There are literally 1,000’s Christians that believe that the trinity is in error many of them used to believe in the trinity. We are called Biblical Unitarians (BU) to distinguish from Trinitarians.

“The Hebrew Bible and the New Testament contain well over twenty thousand pronouns and verbs describing the One God. In order to grasp this statement, perhaps a brief grammar lesson will clarify. Personal pronouns are those little words that are used to refer to a person rather than repeating his or her name. There are both singular and plural personal pronouns. Plural personal pronouns include: we, us, our, ours, they, them, their, and theirs. Singular personal pronouns include: I, me, my, he, him, his, she, her, and hers. Back to the Bible: God is referred to by the words “he,” “his,” and “him” thousands of times. For example, perhaps the most famous verse in the whole Bible is John 3:16: “For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son….” Notice the type of personal pronouns used for God - “he” and “his.” These pronouns are singular; thus, God is a singular person ( i.e. He is one). If God were a Trinity (three persons), then John 3:16 should read: “For God so loved the world that They gave Their only begotten Son….” Thus, the simple fact that God is always referred to by singular personal pronouns is strong evidence that God is a single person!

This is exactly what one would expect if the central creed of Jesus (the Shema) is taken seriously: “Hear O Israel, the LORD your God is one LORD” (Deuteronomy 6:4; Mark 12:29). Yahweh is in a class by Himself (Deuteronomy 4:35, 39; Is. 45:5 and 6). There is no one that even comes close to Him - He has no equals. He alone is the uncreated One, and He alone deserves all of our worship (Matthew 4:10; Luke 4:8; John 4:23 and 24).

When my wife and I came to truly understand this truth about their being One God, we had so much peace and joy in our hearts. To us that was confirmation that what we now believe is correct. I now see more and more scriptures which make sense.

All I have done is looked at the scriptures on who is God and read documents that helped me see another way to understand what the writers of them were saying. I am no one special, I will fully admit. I just persevere and want to know the truth and share the good message of the full Gospel of the Kingdom of God. I have had the time to spend on this subject and I know most of you have busy lives both at work and home. In the modern world we need to make time to study the bible. The world is so anti-god that false beliefs can creep in without us knowing it. If after reading carefully what I have written and you still believe that the Trinity doctrine is true that is OK.

Below is an image extract of an article on Sir Isaac Newton (1643 – 1727) whose accomplishments are many. He was a devout Christian and wrote more on Christian theology than he did on the natural sciences for which he is famous. Some 2.5 million words. He did not believe in the Trinity even though he could be put in prison for not doing so.

Mark 7:13 making the word of God of no effect through your tradition which you have handed down. And many such things you do.”

I would suggest that the full teaching of the Trinity doctrine that is a tradition that started in 381. The Final stage of Trinitarian development came in 451 at The Council of Chalcedon. Some 420 years after Jesus died.

Basic Historical Background of the Trinity Doctrine

Some are unaware that the word trinity or the idea is not in the bible nor and specific teaching on it. Jesus was very scathing on the scribes and Pharisees about their traditions.

My purpose has been to present what I see as the truth about who is God, Jesus and the Holy Spirit based on the scriptures. The Trinity doctrine does not line up with them. I have been studying this for over a year now. The testimony of thousands of other Christians over the centuries starting in about 325 AD when the doctrine of the Trinity was starting to be formulated confirm that God is one person and there is only one God as we know it.

I will not being covering all the scriptures that seem to teach that there is a trinity. That would make this email too long. I do have however posts on my blog and on my PC that address every known scriptures that Trinitarians use to support their stance.

The key truth is that scripture does not contradict itself so the scriptures I use to show that God is one person, that Jesus was a man and the Holy Spirit is not a person need to be explained by any Trinitarian that my understanding is wrong.

I am ready to be proved wrong. Due to my personality and my career in IT in various positions I have learnt to solve problems and use logic. I have changed my understanding on a number Christians doctrines, like baptism not being a symbolic act and deliverance being something that all Christians can do and not just a Pastor.

We all know that Satan our enemy has been trying to corrupting the teaching of God and Jesus Christ from the beginning. We just have to look at what happened in the Garden of Eden. Paul and John had to address false teachings that had sprung up in their time. E.g. That there was no resurrection. 1 Corinthians 15.

The modern church has not been immune from this. E.g. Baptism, tongues and deliverance which are very basic and even they have been taught incorrectly for centuries.

In my above greeting I have written what Paul said to the Galatians 1:3. “Grace to you and peace from God the Father and our Lord Jesus Christ”.

Notice that the Holy Spirit is not mentioned at all. Paul uses this same phrase as a greeting in all of his letters except Hebrews. So if the Holy Spirit is a person why is his name not mentioned. Does he not want to send the Christians grace and peace? What I have come to understand is that the Holy Spirit is a limited extension of our Father God’s power. So the Holy Spirit is not an individual person. It is part of the One God.

Another example of this is Matthew 1:18 Now the birth of Jesus Christ was as follows: After His mother Mary was betrothed to Joseph, before they came together, she was found with child of the Holy Spirit. Luke 1:35 says the same thing.

God the Father being the Father of Jesus is key to our Gospel of the Kingdom message.

So is the Holy Spirit who is a separate person in the trinity doctrine the actual father of Jesus or not? Obviously the answer is no.

Also we have to believe that the scriptures are God breathed and that they mean what they say. We cant say that the Holy Spirit conceived Jesus on behalf of God. Matthew and Luke would have made that clear if that was the case. To them the Holy Spirit or a more literal meaning the Holy Breath or as it is written elsewhere the Spirit (breath) of God was known to be the Father God himself and not someone else. So the trinity doctrine breaks down in this simple scripture.

If the Holy Spirit was a person then he is the father of Jesus and not God. However if it is the extension of God then indeed God is the Father of Jesus.

In the Bible, the disciples are begotten of the Holy Spirit (John 3:6-8) and they are also said to have been begotten of the Father (1 Peter 1:3; 1 John 5:1). In the doctrine of the Trinity, the Holy Spirit is not the Father. If the Holy Spirit and the Father are two distinct persons, then a contradictory absurdity results where Christians are fathered by two different fathers who begat them: (1) God the Father (2) the Holy Spirit. However, if the Holy Spirit is not a separate third person but the personal presence and power of God and then there is no contradiction.

I think it is dangerous to believe that we know everything about the gospel of the Kingdom and that we have arrived at all the truth that God wants to share with us. Many false teachings have been started by that mindset. We just have to look at the Catholic, Anglican, Methodist churches as our example. These churches all have sincere believers in them, but they have been taught incorrectly on some doctrines and truths.

It is difficult for anyone to admit they are wrong or have been misled. The majority of our pastors and teachers are sincere Christians but they have not been taught by their leaders in the past incorrectly as well.

The Greek way of thinking in the Western world likes the idea of 3 persons in One God and that they all are immortal and co-equal. It is mysterious and difficult to communicate and people love that. It took over 400 years for the Church to develop the Trinity doctrine and that is because they could not make it make logical sense. The reason was because it was man made and not from God.

There have been scholars and individual Christians who have challenged the Trinity doctrine and they have been dismissed, called heretics and murdered. A learned man called Michael Servetus was murdered by John Calvin as he put forward in writing his belief that the trinity doctrine was in error. He was chased around Europe by both Catholic and Protestant church authorities. Many Christians have lost their lives for not agreeing with the Trinity doctrine. This kept an alternative view of God under control with not very many knowing about an alternative view.

Some will ask why should I care that I have not be taught correctly about God, Jesus and the Holy Spirit and their roles. This I would submit is a dangerous stance to take. As we draw near to the Tribulation there will be more false teaching and many will be led astray. Satan knows what is the truth about God, Jesus and the Holy Spirit and he will exploit any misunderstanding of their roles. We have seen cults develop over the centuries around the definition of God, why are we immune. Jesus stated

Mat_24:24 For false christs and false prophets will rise and show great signs and wonders to deceive, if possible, even the elect.

Mar_13:22 For false christs and false prophets will rise and show signs and wonders to deceive, if possible, even the elect.

1 John 2:22 Who is a liar but he who denies that Jesus is the Christ? He is antichrist who denies the Father and the Son.

Notice the John states that an antichrist is someone who denies the Father and the Son. Also that the Holy Spirit is not mentioned.

The term antichrist refers to someone who substitutes themselves in Christ’s place before the Second Coming. So if we believed that Jesus is God and he preexisted and then someone comes along and says that that is not true then many will say that person is an antichrist but in reality he is not. Everything will become confusing.

Jesus told us the build our house on the rock of Gods word otherwise when a storm comes we will not be able stand. There are Christian that have questions about the trinity but just keep quiet as the feel peer pressure and think that are not bright enough to understand or explain it, but is must be right because their Pastor say so.

Jesus should be our foundational teacher for who is God of the bible and what are his characteristic.

Jesus never once alluded to their being three persons that make up God. On the contrary he stated clearly a number of times that God was ONE person and the only true God, by quoting the Old Testament Jewish Shema from Deuteronomy 6:4 in Mark 12:29.

Deuteronomy 6:4 “Hear, O Israel: The LORD our God, the LORD is one!

The “one” means the number one.

John 17:3 And this is eternal life, that they may know You, the only true God, and Jesus Christ whom You have sent.

So Jesus in John 17:3 stated that only God the Father was the only true God again confirming Deuteronomy 6:4.

Following are some examples of scriptures using God being “One”. There can be no confusion based on these examples that when the term “God is One” or the “One God” that it means that God is 1 person only. There might be other scriptures that seem to indicate differently but they all must compliment on build on all the other scriptures including the ones in this post.

Matthew 19:17 So He said to him, “Why do you call Me good? No one is good but One, that is, God. But if you want to enter into life, keep the commandments.”

Mark 12:32 So the scribe said to Him, “Well said, Teacher. You have spoken the truth, for there is one God, and there is no other but He.

1 Corinthians 8:6 yet for us there is one God, the Father, of whom are all things, and we for Him; and one Lord Jesus Christ, through whom are all things, and through whom we live.

Ephesians 4:6 one God and Father of all, who is above all, and through all, and in you all.

James 2:19 You believe that there is one God. You do well. Even the demons believe—and tremble!

1 Timothy 2:5-7 For there is one (heis) God and one (heis) Mediator between God and men, the Man Christ Jesus,

6 who gave Himself a ransom for all, to be testified in due time,

7 for which I was appointed a preacher and an apostle—I am speaking the truth in Christ and not lying—a teacher of the Gentiles in faith and truth.

Here we can see that the One God is the Father and Jesus is referred to as a man and the Mediator. Also notice that the Greek word “heis” is used twice which means a literal numerical “1”, once for God and once for Jesus.

Nowhere in the scriptures is there a teaching on there being 3 persons which make up God. There is extensive teaching on salvation, baptism, repentance, baptism of the spirit, tribulation, resurrection, the rapture, the fulfilment of the Abraham’s covenant in the future. That we saved by faith as we have been grafted into the Jewish vine started by Abraham.

Paul addressed any misunderstandings on the above. There was no controversy over there a Trinity made up of 3 persons which equal the one God. There would have been as the Jews believed in a strict monotheistic God called YHWH. Also the trinity doctrine cannot be found in any obvious way in the OT.

The trinity doctrine is man’s wisdom and not Gods. Man created the idea of the Trinity. The idea of the trinity cannot be found in the bible. This has been admitted by Trinitarian theologians. The website You Got Questions says on the issue of the Trinity https://www.gotquestions.org/Trinity-Bible.html that:-

“Though we can understand some facts about the relationship of the different Persons of the Trinity to one another, ultimately, it is incomprehensible to the human mind. However, this does not mean the Trinity is not true or that it is not based on the teachings of the Bible.”

Really?

i.e. That it is a mystery. This has been the get out clause used for centuries.

Something that is so foundational to our faith is not understandable and is a mystery. Every other key doctrine can be understood.

God is more than able to explain who He is what are His characteristics. I submit that on this most important subject/doctrine which is the makeup and operation of God we should not be in the dark. The enemy could and does use faulty logic to confuse the body of Christ. Many religions have multiple gods and even triune structures. So how would we defend our God if we cant explain it to them, how our God operates. Muslims and Jews have attacked the doctrine of the Trinity as it is not Monotheistic as we cant explain it. It has been a stumbling block for these people to become Christians. Imagine if we could take away this stumbling block.

As it is, we have a split in the Church over who God is due to the trinity doctrine. So who is right?

God has made it clear in the scriptures that Jesus was man who He conceived in Mary’s womb. He was not God and did not pre-exist. There are no scriptures that point to a pre-existence if looked at without a bias and using proper biblical methods for interpreting the meaning.

Jesus is called the last Adam who was a man and Jesus in order to be called the last Adam he had to be a man and not a man-god.

IS JESUS a ‘MERE’ MAN?

Jesus was never a mere man because prior to his resurrection:

  • He was the only man ever to have been literally ‘begotten’ by God.
  • He was the only man ever to have been conceived in a virgin.
  • He was the only man ever to have lived a perfect life i.e. without sinning.
  • He was the only man in a position to pay for Adam’s sin. Prior to Jesus’ exaltation he was the equal of the pre-sinning Adam.

Jesus is an even greater man since his resurrection because:

  • He is the only man to have been granted imperishability and immortality with power.
  • He is the only man to be literally in God’s presence.
  • He is the only man who has been granted “all authority in heaven and on earth.”
  • He is the one who will be earth’s ruler in God’s Kingdom.

So, although Jesus was and is human he was and is a completely unique human.

Right from the beginning of the Bible in Genesis 1:1 the concept of God being 2-3 persons has been taught, however this is incorrect as it cannot be proven to be referring to 3 persons as God. On the contrary in Genesis 1:5 it states that He singular called the darkness Night.

The meaning of Elohim is dealt with in detail in the following posts.

What does Elohim really mean in Genesis 1

The meaning of the Hebrew word Elohim

Many have the idea that Jesus had to be God to be able to take away the sin of the world. But the Bible never says in the New Testament that Jesus had to be God for our salvation. A issue would have been, how does God die since he is immortal.

How Could Jesus Save us if He was just a Man?

Discussing the Doctrine of the Trinity

Many find it difficult to understand the Holy Spirit as fas as being God is concerned, this post goes into detail on how it should have been translated.

What is the Holy Spirit or breath of god?

My belief is that God will help you see the truth of the above if you read the scriptures for what they actually say. He will always confirm his word. We need to seek the truth with our whole heart.

Blessings To All

Raymond
