Case for a Second Group of 144,000 being Sethites in Revelation 14:1-5

Revelation 14:1-5 NKJV

  1. Then I looked, and behold, a Lamb standing on Mount Zion, and with Him one hundred and forty-four thousand, having His Father’s name written on their foreheads.
  2. And I heard a voice from heaven, like the voice of many waters, and like the voice of loud thunder. And I heard the sound of harpists playing their harps.
  3. They sang as it were a new song before the throne, before the four living creatures, and the elders; and no one could learn that song except the hundred and forty-four thousand who were redeemed from the earth.
  4. These are the ones who were not defiled with women, for they are virgins. These are the ones who follow the Lamb wherever He goes. These were redeemed from among men, being firstfruits to God and to the Lamb.
  5. And in their mouth was found no deceit, for they are without fault before the throne of God.

Below, Tim Warner makes a compelling case for the 144,000 to be a separate group of men to the 144,000 mentioned in Revelation 7:4 which is based upon the righteous Sethites from Genesis. Josephus in Antiquities, Book I, ch. 2-3 states that the Sethities had the below characteristics and this was past on orally throughout history.

The above passage takes on new meaning when we approach it from the perspective of the first covenant people the sons of God. Consider the four identifying markers:

  • They are a fairly small number, 144,000.
  • They possess the Father’s name.
  • They were “not defiled with women.”
  • They are the “firstfruits to God and to the Lamb.”

There is only one group in the Bible that fits all four of these identifying markers, the seven generations of faithful descendants of Seth through Enosh.

They are a small number, 144,000: The faithful sons of Seth through Enosh were one tribe spanning only seven generations. If each son, beginning with Enosh, had an average of 7.25 sons and 7.25 daughters (each man having only one wife of the daughters of Enosh), and if this continued for seven generations, the total number of faithful sons of Seth through Enosh would be 145,220 men who were “not defiled with women.” All other covenant people in Scripture number in the millions.

Using the same 7.25 figure, the 8th generation (Noah’s generation who took foreign wives) would have numbered over a million wicked sons of Enosh (1,052,845). And their sons would number over seven million tyrants and bullies (7,633,126).

2. They possess the Father’s Name: The first covenant people are specifically said to have “called themselves by the name of JEHOVAH.”

3. They were “not defiled with women”: The seven generations of Seth’s descendants before Noah’s generation were “not defiled with [pagan] women.” The Bible teaches that “marriage is honorable.” There is only one way, according to Scripture, that “women” defile God’s people. And that is when God’s covenant people take wives from among those who are not God’s people.

4. They are the “firstfruits unto God and the Lamb.” No group after the flood can claim to be the “firstfuits.” The very first covenant people, “called by the name of JEHOVAH,” uniquely qualify for this title.

Assuming the identity of this group of 144,000 to be the faithful sons of Seth, the statement that they were “not defiled with women” clearly implies that they are from among a larger group, some of which where “defiled with women.” The language strongly implies that these are the “sons of God” in Genesis who did not take foreign wives. No other group is distinguished in the Bible in this way.

Following is an outline for the attached video teaching for the 144,000 being Sethites.

Verse 1

1. The Lamb who opened the seven seals Revelation 4-5.

2. Lamb “having stood up” (perfect tense), implies no longer seated (Psalm. 110:1) has already received the Kingdom.

3. “Mt. Zion” is on earth – Jerusalem.

4. Surrounded by 144,000.

Some claim these are the same 144,000 in Revelation 7 however these have the Lamb’s & Father’s name in their foreheads:

1. Genesis 4:26 Hebrews “Then began to sir-name the name YHVH”

2. Genesis 4:26 KJV (margin) “call to themselves the name of the LORD”

3. Genesis 4:26 LXX. “This one hoped, to surname the name, Master, the God.”

Verse 2

Sound of stringed orchestra & choir from the sky above Mt. Zion.

Verse 3

The 144,000 sing in accompaniment, learning the unique song having been redeemed from the land

Verse 4

1. Sons of Seth who were “not defiled with women”

a. Josephus, Antiquities, Bk. I, ch. 2-3, The Sons of Seth

1. Lived separate from the rest

2. Preserved Adam’s prophecies in stone

3. Remained segregated for 7 generations (until Enoch)

4. 8th generation forsook God, took foreign wives

5. Noah preached to his relatives (Sethites)

b. They are “virgins” (Parthenon – female of marriagable age)

which is the same term used for the “Bride” (2 Cor. 11:2)

c. Follow the Lamb as a musical entourage in the Kingdom, Christ’s “worship singers”

d. Redeemed from beside men (Adam’s race)

e. They were firstfruits to God and to the Lamb (implies original token crop)

Verse 5

No deceit, for they are flawless (“before the throne” not in old mss).
