How the Israelites saw Earth as Land, Sea and Sky

We have a sophisticated view of the world and the universe. 5,000 years ago that was not the case. Our knowledge has led us to over complicate bible scriptures and read into scripture that which was not intended at all. This is called eisegesis. We can all make this mistake.

God always spoke to the Israelites in terms they would understand and it kept things simple for everyone to understand. It also improves accuracy. God even in judgement uses the most basic of things, like plagues, hail, floods and war. As seen in Exodus with the 10 plagues. In Revelation we see the same types of things. There might be an asteroid or large meteor showers that occurs but not something like a laser beam coming out of heaven or a literal dragons.

The translators of the Greek word “ge” should have actually used the word “land” in many instances. The reason they did not is not clear except they were using a Western view of the scriptures and our new understanding of the world as earth.

Looking at the context “ge” is often referring to the land of Israel or the Middle East and not the earth.

Sky

The Greek word (G3772) for sky is “ouranos” which is translated as heaven nearly all the time. There are only a few times the translators used sky.

The word heaven should be translated as sky most of the time. The atmosphere up until the clouds was referred to as sky. God dwelt in the third heaven (sky) as Paul writes in 2 Corinthians 12:2

2 Corinthians 12:2 I know a man in Christ who fourteen years ago—whether in the body I do not know, or whether out of the body I do not know, God knows—such a one was caught up to the third heaven.

Why third? Well the sky we see is seen as the first heaven. The first heaven is the visible sky we see up until the clouds. It seems they saw the stars, sun and moon as in the second heaven. God was in the third sky(heaven) which is invisible. We might say it is another dimension. It is very logical and simple for any person to understand and does not need to be too scientific to convey truths and needed information. It might seem strange reading scriptures with the word sky instead of heaven but that is due to all the repetition of the scriptures over the years and all the teaching on heaven.

The Israelites and all the ancient people did not have our technology like telescopes and satellites supplying them with information.

God specifically led Moses to write in Genesis that the world is divided in land, sea and sky containing the sun, moon and stars.

They did not have the construct of earth as we do today with continents, many oceans and many layers of atmosphere.

Earth & Sea

Earth is a word that translators have used which would have been foreign to the Jews. We need to take this into account when reading the scriptures.

The bible is Israel and Jerusalem centric and so the scriptures need to be read with this fact in mind when reading them. As an example when we read the word sea in Revelation it refers most of the time to the Mediterranean sea and not seas and the word earth should be understood as land most of the time. The context should dictate which.

An example:-

Revelation 8:5,7 Then the angel took the censer, filled it with fire from the altar, and threw it to the earth. And there were noises, thunderings, lightnings, and an earthquake.

7 The first angel sounded: And hail and fire followed, mingled with blood, and they were thrown to the earth. And a third of the trees were burned up, and all green grass was burned up. NKJV

Should be :-

Revelation 8:5-7 And the messenger took the censer, and filled it from the fire of the altar, and threw it onto the land. And there were thunderings, noises, lightnings, and a shaking.

7 And the first messenger sounded, and there came hail and fire, mixed with blood, and it was thrown upon the land. And a third of the land burned, and a third of the trees burned, and all green vegetation burned. LGV

It makes much more sense I hope you agree.

God is going to be judge all the nations in the Middle East that attacked Israel over the centuries and also Israel itself. It seems likely that God is not going to directly judge the whole world with all the judgement that are released by the seals, trumpets and bowls. The sun darkening and moon turning red will be seen by the whole world but Gods judgements are focused mainly on one large region. However all of mankind will be judged when Jesus comes back.

Conclusion

You can nearly change all the words heaven and earth to sky and land respectively and it changes how we would now understand what that scripture means. In many cases it has a major impact on how we would understand the scripture in relation to other scriptures.

This is a controversial stance and understanding but it is in keeping with understanding the bible and prophecy in my opinion.
